The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is a standardized, multiple-choice examination designed to assess the examinee's problem solving, critical thinking, and knowledge of science concepts and principles prerequisite to the study of medicine. The scores are reported in Physical Sciences, Verbal Reasoning, Biological Science, and Social Sciences (Sociology and Psychology).
Almost all U.S. medical Schools and Canadian schools require applicants to submit MCAT exam scores. Many schools do not accept MCAT exam scores that are more than three years old.

Volunteering
Any experience giving back to the community will be looked upon favorably by professional school admissions committees. It would be ideal if some of your volunteering was in a healthcare setting. This would combine volunteering with exposure to the field. Get in the habit of tracking your volunteer hours, as most professional school applications will ask for an estimate of the time you spent volunteering.
Shadowing
Shadowing means working directly with a health care provider in their professional environment. You have the opportunity to observe how they plan their day, how they interact with their patients, how they chose their career, and how they feel about current events! Finding a healthcare provider who is willing to allow you to shadow can be a challenge, but it is worth the effort. Many students start with their own health care providers. You may also network with other pre-health students to see where they have shadowed.
HHPO Preceptorship Program:
HHPO works with the Hispanic Physician Association (HPA) in Austin to provide a shadowing program. The Preceptorship Program matches students based on their applications to physicians in Austin. Students have the opportunity to rank the medical specialty of interest. There are limited slots for students, thus the program is limited to paid HHPO members who are active and display responsibility and dedication in their application. Members can expect to have the applications open early in the Fall semester.
Direct Patient Care Experience:
The UT-Austin HPO provides the following resources for direct patient care. Students and members should note that these are not requirements for admissions and most applicants that enter medical school likely do not have this. However, it is a great experience for medical school applications.
