UTSW class of 2019 Interests: As far as medicine? Not being bored when I wake up. Other than that, ultimate Frisbee and going to concerts. Passions: Entering food contests, completing food challenges. T-swift/K-dot jam sessions. Floor is lava-ing. Advice: When you want to succeed as badly as you wan to breathe, then you will be successful. ~Eric Thomas As far as getting into med school. If this is what you want, go for it. I had a 2.6 gpa one semester and I thought my chances getting into a school were done. But I re-evaluated what I really wanted for my life, and ended up getting accepted to every school that I interviewed at. Specifically for the interview: don't prepare your answers too much. Do you. The interviews are now so much more "casual" in that they are more conversations than answering questions. This is what actually got me into most schools because almost all my interviews ran much, much longer than they were supposed to. |

Interested in Family & Emergency Medicine Advice: Live a happy and humble life. No denying being a doctor is a prestigious profession; however, never forget how extremely humbling it is to know people will trust you with their own health or with the health of their loved ones. With that being said, work hard, be compassionate, and have fun! Passions: Softball, dancing, low-resource medicine, and experiencing new things! |

Interested in Internal Medicine
Advice: I’d say the hardest part is figuring out what you want, not necessarily what some people around you may think is better/acceptable. Find out if medicine is for you: shadow, google stuff, hang out with people also interested. For me, once I definitely knew becoming a doctor is what I wanted, it was much easier to follow through the steps required. Never feel bad for asking for help and counsel, family and friends included, the sooner the better and, when you can, help those following your steps. In short, I advise you to discover your priorities, place them in order, act on them with others’ support and share what you have learned.

Advice: Know if this is what you want to do by shadowing doctors, speaking to health professions advisors and doing your own research. Then, dedicate your life to it. Join a pre-med organization and become an officer, study hard for the mcat and meet professors for good letters of recommendation. The rest falls in line.
Passions: handball, soccer and volleyball. Medical passions: no idea! But we just started on cadavers so surgery is now a viable option.

My advice is to not let anybody doubt your abilities. If you want something enough, you can grasp it. My own high school science teachers doubted I could succeed at UT, but I wanted to prove them wrong. I wanted to show them that I could be as successful as my dad.
